A small fleet of box trucks parked in a lot

Fleet-Building 101: When to Add Truck Number Two

September 23, 2026•1 min read

Truck number one is usually obvious, you need it, you get it, you're in business. Truck number two is the harder call, and it's the one I get asked about more than almost anything else.

The real question isn't "can I afford a second truck." It's "am I turning down work right now because I don't have a second truck." Those are two different problems, and only one of them means it's time to add equipment. I've seen people finance a second truck because business felt busy, and then that truck sat half-used because the work wasn't actually there yet, just adrenaline talking.

What I look at with people: how many jobs got turned down or delayed in the last few months specifically because of a capacity problem, not a scheduling problem. If that number's real, a second truck usually pays for itself fast. If it's not there yet, I'll tell you honestly to wait, even though that means no deal for me today.

Growing a fleet is a good problem to have when it's driven by real demand. It's an expensive mistake when it's driven by excitement. I'd rather help you figure out which one you're looking at before you sign anything.
